Why legal translation is a category of its own

Legal language is not decorative. Each term sits inside a system of rules, and the same English word can map onto two different Turkish concepts with materially different consequences. Turkey has a civil law system, drawing historically on continental European codes, while much of the English-language legal material we are asked to translate comes out of common law jurisdictions. There is often no clean one-to-one equivalent between the two, and pretending otherwise is how translations go wrong in ways nobody notices until a dispute.

The working method is therefore conservative. Where a concept has an established Turkish equivalent, we use it. Where it does not, we render the term in a way that preserves its function and, if the ambiguity is material, flag it rather than silently choosing an interpretation. A translator's job is to carry meaning across, not to resolve a legal question that the parties themselves have not resolved.

What we translate

Commercial contracts and their annexes, articles of association and trade registry documents, powers of attorney, court filings and judgments, expert witness reports, arbitration documents, employment agreements, licensing and distribution agreements, and correspondence intended to be relied on in proceedings. Documents intended for use in court or before a public authority usually need to be sworn, and frequently notarised as well.

Consistency, formatting and confidentiality

In a long agreement the same defined term may appear a hundred times, and it has to be rendered identically every time. A definition that drifts halfway through a contract creates precisely the ambiguity the drafters were trying to eliminate. We maintain terminology consistently within a document and across the related documents in a matter, so an amendment reads against the agreement it amends.

Layout carries meaning too. Clause numbering, cross-references, schedules and defined-term capitalisation are part of how a legal document works, and a translation that renumbers clauses breaks every cross-reference pointing at them. We preserve the structure of the source so the two versions can be read side by side.

Legal documents are confidential by nature, often before a transaction is public. Material is handled on that basis and shared only with the people working on it.

One thing we do not do is give legal advice. We translate what your document says. Whether a clause is enforceable, whether a filing is correct, and what you should do next are questions for a qualified lawyer, and we will say so rather than guess.
